Understanding Roof Damage: Cosmetic, Functional, and Structural
Not all roof damage is treated equally, by you or by your insurer. Here's the framework we use on every assessment.

The three buckets
Every roof issue we see falls into one of three categories: cosmetic, functional, or structural. Knowing which one you're looking at changes everything about how you respond.
Cosmetic damage
Surface marks, minor discoloration, isolated granule loss. The roof still functions; the look is affected. Often not claimable, but worth documenting.
Functional damage
Broken seals, cracked shingles, compromised flashing, exposed nail heads. The roof can still appear intact, but its ability to shed water is impaired. This is where most legitimate claims live.
Structural damage
Sagging decking, fractured trusses, large punctures. This is the rare, urgent category. Stop, secure the home, and get expert eyes on it the same day.
